Heirlooms sale raises £1m to help preserve historic Devon castle
More than a million pounds has been raised in a sale of family heirlooms by Lord Devon of Powderham Castle. The proceeds of yesterday's auction at Sotheby's in London will help to conserve the 14th century property near Kenton, which has been the family seat since it was built by Sir Philip Courtenay between 1390 and 1420.
The most expensive lot of the day was a George II carved mahogany library table, which fetched £127,250. A private collector paid £91,250 for a painting of Sir William Courtenay's sloop-rigged yacht by Samuel Scott. And a pair of George III mahogany library armchairs were snapped up by a trade buyer for £67,250.
Around three quarters of the 111 lots up for grabs found a buyer, with the selection from Powderham Castle fetching a total of just over £1m.
