Castle's history goes on display
Archaeological finds dating back to Roman times are among items on show at a new exhibition at one of Britain's most important historical strongholds.
Exhibits excavated on site at Pevensey Castle in East Sussex include domestic items such as candlesticks and hair pins used by Roman women.
There are also military items, weaponry and ammunition such as arrowheads, crossbow bolts and cannon balls.
The exhibition, opening on Monday, has an interactive model of the castle.
It helps to tell the story of the building. Its roughly oval plan dates from Roman times.
Pevensey Castle was where William Duke of Normandy and his troops assembled before claiming the English crown at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
It has towers dating from the 13th century, was a garrison at a later date and was used in the defence against the Spanish Armada.

Vandals Smash Historic Stone at Castle Gate
A group of up to 10 teenagers are being hunted by police after a large stone was damaged at Pevensey Castle. The free standing stone was targeted on Wednesday evening when it was moved from the entrance of the Roman West Gate and smashed.
A passer by noticed a group of youths hanging round at 10.15pm and when he returned to the same spot 45 minutes later found the destruction. Police do not know whether the teenagers committed the act, but are keen to trace the group as they may have vital evidence as to who perpetrated the crime.
The stone will be removed and taken to Battle Abbey for an historic areas inspector to view it. A spokesman for English Heritage, who run the castle, said, 'We are very disappointed by acts of vandalism at the site and are encouraging local people to take more pride in one of Britain's oldest castles. Random evening security checks are made at Pevensey Castle and they will be stepped up.'
Anyone with information about the damage is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 2137 of August 17th.
