Warwick Castle is sold

Warwick Castle has been sold for the second time in two years.

Tussauds' owners Dubai International Capital, the company that owns the castle, have reliquished an 80 per cent stake in all their enterprises for £1 billion - about £200 million more than they paid for the whole of the company in 2005.

Merlin Entertainments, which owns Legoland, has paid the sum, making it the world's second largest visitor attraction operator behind Disney. While Merlin will be looking to expand Tussauds' attractions like its waxwork museums and Alton Towers, the new owners say there will be no change to the way things are run at the castle.

Warwick Castle deal approved

The takeover of the leisure group which owns Warwick Castle has been was approved by the European Commission. A statement said the link-up posed no significant risk to effective competition in the sector of theme and amusement parks, zoos, and visitor attractions around Europe.

The deal - which needed formal backing from Brussels under EU merger rules - involves Luxembourg-based Merlin Entertainments Group acquiring the Tussaud's group which also owns Madame Tussaud's, Alton Towers and the London Eye.

"The proposed merger would create a group active on the global stage in the entertainment business" said a Commission statement.

The overlaps between the activities of the two organisations were mostly in the UK, particularly the South East and London: "However, for all leisure attractions markets concerned, the combined firm would continue to face several strong, effective competitors with significant market shares."

Castle to auction 16th century armour

As fashions go, it may be nearly 500 years out of date. But anyone with a cool £30,000 in their back pocket will be able to own their own a suit of 16th century armour from Warwick Castle.

The valuable piece of German half-armour in the so-called Maximilian fashion will be auctioned off at London's famous Southeby's auctioneers later this month. It will be joined in the auction by a full suit of 16th century European field armour worth between £18,000 and £24,000, as well as 35 lots ranging from rapiers and broadswords to early flintlock pistols and blunderbusses.

Proceeds of the sale will go towards paying for the new £1million Dream of Battle exhibition at the medieval fortress.

Janet Pinn, house manager at Warwick Castle, said: "We have so much armour in this castle that, when we had the collection insured, we discovered that we had a number of duplications. As big as this castle is, we didn't have room for it and a lot of it has no links to Warwick Castle. So, if you have that sort of money and a beautiful home, what better than having a suit of armour to display there."

The sale will also include an Italian decorated horseman's helmet, valued between £10,000 and £12,000, which is believed to be from the suit displayed in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
