From “The Daily Telegraph”, 18th June 2005

Castle Subjected top 700 years of makeovers goes on sale – a snip at £2m

The 13th century Caverswall Castle in Staffordshire survived the Civil War, provided a safe haven for nuns fleeing the French Revolution and was the home to the Wedgwood family of pottery makers.

The Grade I listed building has 24 rooms, all of which are habitable, and five turrets that are currently being used for holiday lets.

Tony Morris-Eyton, of the estate agent FPD Savills, says it is in good condition and needs no renovation. And priced at £2 million, it was excellent value compared with the price of a London town house, he added.

Sir William de Caverswall founded the castle more that 700 years ago at the point where the two tributaries of the Blythe rise, seven miles south of Stoke-on-Trent.
He used the natural source to form a moat around his castle, which was completed in 1275 on the site of an old Saxon settlement.

Some 300 years later, with the castle falling into disrepair, it was taken over by the wool merchant Matthew Craddock, who was also the mayor of Stafford.
He began to refurbish the building in 1625. Two decades later, the castle's defences were called into action as a base for Cromwell supporters during the Civil War.

In later years, it provided shelter for Benedictine nuns who had escaped the French Revolution. In the 19th century, Sir Percival Radcliffe had the moat drained to form two separate lakes.

The Wedgwood family moved in during the 1880s, controlling their pottery empire from the castle.

In 1891 Caverswall was bought by W E Bowers, who remained there for 40 years, in which time he added a wing, now a separate residence.

Recently, the castle has been run as a bed-and-breakfast business. The grounds include large lakes, parkland and farmland.

I have contacted the agents for a copy of the sales particulars, but for those who would like to see details now, I downloaded a copy from the agents' website.
