That church, and it's churchyard were featured on a Time Team, looking for early Christian sites in the town.

Just in case you are interested, Billings Antiquities of Scotland in four volumes is currently up for grabs for £200 (sale end date 24th Feb). The item is located in Belgium, and has 240 plates (60 in each volume). Could be a bargain for someone.

If only......
Duncan
Right now out of my price range, where was that at eBay?
AJR
Yes Ralph - it was on e-Bay. I forgot to mention that.

Meanwhile, I've found a better image of Hylton Castle, Durham, 1844.
AJR
I've found a bundle more of the Billings prints for sale on e-bay.

Yes. I've only ever seen his internal view before. This one is similar to one of those I purchased - drawn by D. Roberts and engraved by E. Findon. I didn't have a date for it (suspected mid 1800s), but the Billings one is 1847, so I may not be far out.
Gordon
...and it's of the 'other end', as opposed to the usual view of the gatehouse.
AJR
Seen a set of Iona Billings prints for sale - not e-bay.
Here's the images.
Gordon
Beautiful, Billings does the place justice, anyone who has never visited Iona should, it really is a heavenly place, a sense of serenity and peace overwhelm you as you step off the boat...a little piece of heaven on earth....and so full of history, many of Scotland's earliest kings are buried there.

A set of five Billings' prints currently for sale on www.antiqueprints.com.

These are all of Holyrood - House, Palace, Church.
Gordon
Very very nice. They do the old place justice, even as grey as auld reekie! laughlong.gif
AJR
We're getting quite a collection here. Now if only we knew how many he had done, and the place names, we could make an active search for more.
Gordon
That would be good, I'll try and find out about his book, most are taken from that. If someone had a copy we could borrow the index. If only I had some time to get to the Mitchell Library...

Any news on when your book will come through Gordon?
Gordon
No, they were talking about a publishing date of April, we'll wait and see!
AJR
Any more news on this one Gordon?
JohnC
Should be a great book to own - some of these sketches are absolutely beautiful.
Duncan
It'll be fantastic alongside MacGibbon and Ross
Gordon
Still not published.
AJR
But his works can be found and downloaded at http://www.electricscotland.com/books/pdf/baronial.htm
Gordon
This batch of classic texts on line by electric scotland must be relatively recent, none of them were available last time I searched. Good on Electric Scotland, they all deserve a wider audience.
Gordon
Birlinn are now expecting a publication date in November.
Gordon
Oriinally advertised on the Birlinn website at £100, the Autumn catalogue gives a price of £125, unless you order before
25-11, in which case it will be £100.
AJR
I'll pass on this one (for now), but thanks for the tip Gordon. I hope you enjoy your copy when it comes. You've been waiting long enough.
