That church, and it's churchyard were featured on a Time Team, looking for early Christian sites in the town.

Just in case you are interested, Billings Antiquities of Scotland in four volumes is currently up for grabs for £200 (sale end date 24th Feb). The item is located in Belgium, and has 240 plates (60 in each volume). Could be a bargain for someone.

Yes Ralph - it was on e-Bay. I forgot to mention that.
Meanwhile, I've found a better image of Hylton Castle, Durham, 1844.
And one non-castle print.

Very nice, I like the Caerlaverock one particularly.

Yes. I've only ever seen his internal view before. This one is similar to one of those I purchased - drawn by D. Roberts and engraved by E. Findon. I didn't have a date for it (suspected mid 1800s), but the Billings one is 1847, so I may not be far out.

Beautiful, Billings does the place justice, anyone who has never visited Iona should, it really is a heavenly place, a sense of serenity and peace overwhelm you as you step off the boat...a little piece of heaven on earth....and so full of history, many of Scotland's earliest kings are buried there.

Very very nice. They do the old place justice, even as grey as auld reekie!
We're getting quite a collection here. Now if only we knew how many he had done, and the place names, we could make an active search for more.

That would be good, I'll try and find out about his book, most are taken from that. If someone had a copy we could borrow the index. If only I had some time to get to the Mitchell Library...
Here's eight Billings' prints of Glasgow Cathedral.
Here's five prints by Billings of Heriot's Hospital in Edinburgh.
Three prints by Billings of Huntly Castle, Aberdeenshire.

This batch of classic texts on line by electric scotland must be relatively recent, none of them were available last time I searched. Good on Electric Scotland, they all deserve a wider audience.
