A laser level is a wee bit more expensive but can be had for around $25.00 and comes in handy for many jobs including hanging castle neener.gif pictures frames.

Rebar steaks, a cheap line level and string line around here goes for under 5 dollars and is a good investment to use around the house or garden.
The level in place and you might want to note the bubble which is all most on the level. The string or steak needs to be lowered on the left a wee bit but in this case it's being used to determine the location for a foundation wall and doesn't need to be level yet.

I just use the "step back and have a look" method of hanging castle picture frames. In fact I have a habit of the "step back and have a look" at many things. This has often resulted in someone having their toes trodden on (normally Liz), or me tripping over something which an idiot has placed behind me, and falling over backwards. Problem is, that idiot is normally me.

Find level of the area you want to form on, sand, gravel, or dirt can help with this.
