Mindless yobs attack historic castle
The medieval castle at Tattershall was targeted by vandals at the weekend with around £5,000 worth of damage caused. The historical castle, owned and maintained by the National Trust, was vandalised sometime overnight between Friday and Saturday.
Damage was caused to the 14th century leaded windows and Medieval stonework in the gift shop. One of the stained glass windows was smashed and the iron rods were ripped out of another one. This caused extensive damage to features which have been preserved for more than 600 years.
Property manager, Stuart Crow, is saddened by this vandalism to a historic structure, "It is the worst ever incident of vandalism on the castle as far as I'm aware," he said. "The windows are original to the property and restoring them will be costly and require the use of traditional skills and materials to ensure that the fabric of the building is retained."
It will take several months to repair the damage. This is not the first time Tattershall Castle has been targeted by vandals.
The moat surrounding the castle was emptied out last year, in October, after the water pump, which feeds the water from the River Bain, was broken in half and the electrics pulled out - causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage. Staff and volunteers are now working together to patrol the castle grounds during the evenings in an attempt to prevent vandalism taking place.
"It is something that has been planned for a while now," said Mr. Crow.
