Thanks Andrew for the fantastic series of Buck Bros. engravings posted here. They really are a valuable resource.
Have you come across the engraving of Sheriff Hutton castle, Noth Yorkshire, dated I believe, 1721?.
From what I understand this engraving is one of the few 'fakes' (sorry to use such a heretical word in relation to Buck Bros.!).
It would appear that a sketch book owned by Samuel Buck survives in the British Museum that includes a sketch of Sheriff Hutton made on a visit in 1719 or 1721. This sketch apparently shows the castle much as it appears today - ie largely ruinous. The 1721 published engraving by Buck shows the castle largely intact ( I have a book reproduction of this engraving) and with the windows quite different to what remains of the window openings in the surviving ruins.
It is suggested that the much better preserved (then and now) remains of Bolton Castle, not too far distant from Sheriff Hutton, was actually used as a model for the Sheriff Hutton engraving.
Have you heard this?. Any comment or further detail would be interesting.

Fascinating stuff Peter, it illustrates aptly how valuable the originals are, either monetarily or esthetically.
Is there a date for the forgery?

I've never seen the Buck's image of Sheriff Hutton Castle, but there are various references to it on the internet. The British Library lists it (north view) in their Integrated Catalogue as being published in 1721 - but this may not be the year it was sketched.
I have only found one (tenuous) reference to the existence of an image of Bolton Castle (can't remember where

). I initially included it in my list, but have now removed it, as I am unsure that it really exists. Bucks produced one of Bolton Abbey (1720).
If you have a book reproduction, it would be interesting to see it. I am aware that my list is probably incomplete, and any additions or corrections would be welcomed.

Hi all
I would add a scan of the Sheriff Hutton print and a few photo of the castle along with Bolton. However I can't find the 'attach file' button.
Can someone help please?.
Thanks
Peter B.

Save your scan as a jpeg or similar image file. Edit down to 1000pixels or a little less on the longest side, that way it's an ideal size for web viewing and avoids possible time out problems on upload.
Open add reply.
At the foot of the text box you will find a box which says 'File Attachments' and the Browse tab. use the browse to locate and identify the file, whose address should then appear in the browse box. Then press 'add this attachment'. Repeat for each file.
Once it's uploaded, you will be back to the text box, and at the foot is now a list of your attachments, and beside each attachment an 'Add this into post' button. place the cursor in the text box where you want the file to appear and then click the Add This Attachment button, then Add Reply.
Good luck, it will be appreciated when we see it, I promise!

Nope Gordon - file attach button not there. . . . . perhaps it has been disabled during the last system update?.

Once Add Reply is open you need to scroll down a bit to find the File attachments box, below the Text box, keep scrolling down to the end of the smilies, then you'll find 'Post Options', and the next box down should be 'File attachments', if not then you might need intervention from Ralph or Megan. Alternatively try posting it in the Gallery, then we'll link it into a post.
Below should be an image of a folly built from the ruins of Kenmuir House, near Carmyle Glasgow, posted as a test.

No - I definately need the help of a doctor. Even the gallery option is closed - no upload option there either.
Either there is some incompatibility with my Apple Mac Safari browser (not normally a problem with anything) or my account doesn't allow photo uploads. Help. . . . .

Duncan, is it possible to move the section of the thread relating to the problem of uploading pictures to form a new topic within the Buck Brothers Castle Prints section? This should help to keep this thread to just show the prints.
Thanks
