20,000 Bees Infest Okla. Family's Home
2 hours, 32 minutes ago

TULSA, Okla. - Beekeepers plan to remove about 20,000 bees from Eric and Jacque Scholl's home in the historic Swan Lake neighborhood.

The Scholls called for professional help after their 3-year-old son, Nicholas, was stung.

Beekeepers Bruce and Joyce Caldwell found several hives under the floor of the second story of the Scholls' house. The bee combs under the floor were about 6 inches thick and extended several feet. They first noticed the bees two years ago.

A modified vacuum cleaner will be used to suck the bees out through a length of tube and deposit them in a sealed container. The bees will be taken to an apiary, where their honey will be harvested.

The Scholls said they have been delayed in removing the bees because they needed to find a contractor who could expose the insects by tearing out walls and flooring yet stay within the guidelines of the Tulsa Historic Preservation District, which includes their 1930's home.

The family has not received an estimate of how much the bee removal will cost.

Hmmmm...one would think that the sound would give them away much sooner. Not like they are the quietest... HolySheep.gif yikes.gif

That is just plain scary. I'm terrified of bees.

I can't figure out why they waited so long either, kinda strange.
Plenty of contractors would do the job.
Meg says she heard they had to wait for a bee keeper that could handle such a large swarm ---which leads us back to why they waited---sheesh!!
AJR
Perhaps they were hoping for some free honey !

I like bees and would love an apiary eventually....but you figure for the honey, it should have been seeping out of the ceiling. A problem that large and honey should have been flowing pretty freely....just my thought.
Duncan
Meg used to have a few hives and agreed with you. The size and amount of bees should have been a large problem much earlier.
She wants a couple of hives now but has second thoughts about when she could care for them.
Galla
About the same here at this point. They do require some attention and need to get my gardens up and going before the bees will be happy. Perhaps in a couple of years when the kiddos are a bit older yes no.gif ...

Hopefully you get into your new home and get settled quickly. It's been the pits for you guys.

Speaking of gardens we're expanding ours and the Green House soon, literally ran out of room----again!
We've been harvesting tomatoes, tomatioes (SP? husked tomatoes), ground cherrys, squash, herbs, and flowers thanks to the Green House.

When I posted this topic and made the sarcastic comment of Where Else I should have known better. banghead.gif

N.C. Woman Finds 10,000 Bees Inside House
Tue Jun 7, 5:16 PM ET

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Judy Byers saw about 20 bees buzzing outside her window recently and feared thousands of more were lurking close by. Again. Closer inspection Monday revealed a colony of about 10,000 bees living inside the walls of her home. A similar colony had been found at the house about a year ago.

"My first thought was, 'Oh no, they're back; we have to go through this again,'" she said.

Byers called on Joe Powell, a Rocky Mount man who extracts unwanted bee colonies from the walls of homes using a customized vacuum and carting them off to join his personal backyard collection.

Bees are at peak production during the hot months of summer, stocking up on honey to last them through winter hibernation. When overpopulation crowds a faction of bees out of a colony, they often take up refuge in an unprotected patch of wall or roof.

"If they find a hole small enough or large enough, they'll get in it," Powell said.
